Wartburg Theological Seminary serves the mission
of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America
by being a worship-centered community of critical
theological reflection where learning leads to mission
and mission informs learning.
Theological education at Wartburg Seminary is shaped by faithful study and interpretation of the Scripture as God's Word and is informed by Christian tradition and the Lutheran Confessions. Theologically, Wartburg strives to be authentically Lutheran, which is also to be ecumenical. Our theological character, however, is not an end in itself. It serves a higher end, which is to engage faithfully the mission by which we are impelled, the mission to lift up God's unconditional love for the world by lifting up the good news of God in Christ for all peoples in all parts of the world. In doing so, we are guided by God's vision of justification and justice called forth by Christ and enabled by the Holy Spirit.
For the sake of learning that leads to mission, theology must always be formulated afresh for each generation and each place, as the Church builds its life together in Jesus Christ in new and different circumstances. In our circumstance, Wartburg now prepares leaders for a much different world than pastors faced a century, a generation, or even a decade ago. The challenge for the new century will be to integrate these core values of scriptural focus, Lutheran theological integrity, missional outreach and moral justice with appropriate response to the rapid changes affecting human lives around the world.
