Songs of Faith, Hope, and Justice from the Church Near and Far
November 12, 2015 @ 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm
Wartburg Theological Seminary invites the community to the Songs of Faith, Hope and Justice from the Church Near and Far Concert on Thursday, November 12 from 6:30 – 8 p.m. in the Loehe Chapel on the WTS campus.
Join Mary Preus and Tom Witt for a participatory sing-along concert. Join in singing with brothers and sisters from the church around the world — and from diverse communities here in the U.S. — songs, chants, and hymns that explore the connection between faith, justice, liberation, and community.
Following the concert on Friday, November 13, Preus and Witt will be leading a continuing education program, “Come to the Castle,” for clergy and congregational members. Learn more about the Come to the Castle event and how to register.
More about the performers:
Mary Preus is a singer, teacher, worship leader, and choir director with a deep passion for congregational singing. As a member of the group, Bread for the Journey, Mary introduced, led, and taught the singing of diverse hymns and songs from the global church. She served as a member of the Hymnody Editorial Team for the ELCA’s Renewing Worship project. Mary is currently a guest lecturer for worship classes at Luther Seminary in St. Paul, MN and a member of the chapel staff. Tom Witt has been a keyboardist, worship leader, songleader and worship planner for over 25 years. Tom is well known for his spirited and rhythmic skills at the piano, and has developed a deep interest in eclectic congregational song that builds up the body of Christ for the work of mercy, peace, justice, and inclusion in the world – from Gospel to Taizé and Iona, and from 4-part African song to traditional European hymnody. Tom currently serves as music coordinator at United Theological Seminary of the Twin Cities, and is part of the chapel music staff at Luther Seminary, St. Paul, MN. He is co-founder of Bread for the Journey musical ensemble. He co-authored, with Susan Briehl, Holden Prayer Around the Cross: Handbook to the Liturgy (Augsburg Fortress, 2010).
