The entire tri-state community is invited to join Wartburg Theological Seminary (WTS) on Sunday, October 18, 2015 at 7:30 p.m. in the Loehe Chapel on the WTS campus for a presentation by Rev. Heidi Neumark titled Mud in Our Eyes: Seeing Our Way Forward. Neumark will delve into the connection between “(Jesus) spit on the ground, made mud with the saliva, and smeared the mud on the man’s eyes,” (John 9:6) and her belief that smearing the mud of reality over our eyes, however unpleasant it may be, is the beginning step in coming to see where we have been and where we need to go. Neumark intertwines this reality with her own story of exploring her family’s hidden Jewish history and church history during the Holocaust.
Rev. Heidi Neumark is an author, speaker and Lutheran pastor who has served congregations in the South Bronx and presently in Manhattan. Her experiences in congregational and community organizing in the Bronx led to a highly acclaimed book, Breathing Space: A Spiritual Journey in the South Bronx, winner of the 2004 Wilbur Award given by the Religion Communicators Council. She has chapters and sermons in numerous other books and writes regularly for the Christian Century and other journals. In her present position, Pastor Neumark also serves as the executive director of a shelter for homeless LGBTQ youth. She holds an honorary doctorate of divinity from Muhlenberg College. She is married, has two adult children and lives in New York City.
Neumark’s presentation will be followed by a worship service at 8:30 p.m. in Loehe Chapel. More information is available online at https://www.wartburgseminary.edu/renewal/.
