Prolog Week Student Guide

Welcome to Prolog Week

In imitation of God the Creator, we celebrate the beauty of human diversity.

Prolog Week

Wartburg Theological Seminary

Wartburg Theological Seminary is a worship-centered learning community gathered into one by God’s love and grace in Christ. The Holy Spirit calls you here. You belong in this community. In imitation of God the Creator, we celebrate the beauty of human diversity.

The WTS community affirms the value and worth of people of all ages, races, cultures, languages, traditions, socio-economic status, sexual orientations, gender identities and expressions, and bodies of all shapes, sizes, and abilities.

We cherish people of faith traditions other than our own. We hear and have committed ourselves to answer the call of Jesus to love our neighbors as ourselves. In the name of Christ, the members of the Wartburg community embrace you as beloved.

By air: We recommend flying to the nearby airports in our region:

  • Eastern Iowa Airport, Cedar Rapids, IA (1.5 hours away)
  • Quad Cities International Airport, Moline, IL (1.25 hours away)

Ground transportation: If you need assistance with transportation to/from Eastern Iowa Airport in Cedar Rapids, or Quad Cities International Airport in Moline, please input your details on this spreadsheet. Any students can volunteer to assist with transport; extra mileage and time will be reimbursed by the seminary! Folks flying in and needing transport to campus: you must plan to fly in on the Sunday of Prolog Week and depart in the late afternoon/evening of Friday or on Saturday. Transportation is not guaranteed, although reasonable efforts will be made. As you make your travel arrangements,  you can input your details on this spreadsheet. The spreadsheet will be available for input until one week prior to Prolog Week. Please add your requests in advance, as no requests will be considered once we are one week away from the event.

Institution-sponsored transportation support will not be available any other days or at any other airports. You will be responsible for your own ground transportation from Milwaukee, Chicago, and Madison, or if you are planning on arriving on different dates. Outside of the times and locations named above, you can be in communication with your classmates to arrange ride sharing, as needed. You can also consider sharing rental cars, or arranging for pick-up with classmates who live nearby.

By ground: Wartburg has sufficient parking to accommodate all those who will drive to Prolog Week.

By rail: A few nearby Amtrak stations include Galesburg, IL (2 hours away), La Crosse, WI (2.5 hours away), and Burlington, IA (3 hours away)

Anyone who wishes to wear a mask is welcome to do so.

Chapel is an integral part of our WTS life and formation. Please plan to attend worship every day, from 9:30-10:30 am in the Loehe Chapel. Would you like to help with chapel leadership during Prolog Week? Click the link to sign up! There are a variety of roles that you can support.

The WTS Swag Shop will be open 11:30-1:30 on Tuesday and Thursday and 11:30-12:30 on Friday.

  • Clothing
    • Spring Prolog: Dubuque in the winter is typically very cold with the possibility of snow and/or ice.
      • Classes will be held indoors in heated spaces.
      • Hang-out spaces are available indoors.
    • You are invited to participate in WAS Spirit Week theme days, as indicated on the schedule, although participation is not required.
    • Some students prefer to dress business casual while others dress more casually. Please dress comfortably and appropriately for the activities and spaces, as suits your needs.

  • Class supplies:
    • Laptop or tablet: you will want to bring this with you to each class session so that you can access electronic materials and follow along.
    • Note-taking supplies: both analog or digital note-taking are welcomed.
    • No need to bring any books, unless a professor says otherwise! All books are available from the library as ebooks, and professors will review the course titles with you during course sessions.
  • A reusable water bottle
  • An insulated mug for hot drinks, if desired
  • Snacks/food, as desired
  • Bible, devotional, journal as desired for personal use.
  • If you are staying at a hotel, find others that are at the same one so you can carpool.
  • Schedule meetings with your advisor and other staff you may want to speak with in-person. Schedule those asap.
  • Use free time to get to know people! The relationships you build during Prolog will be vital in the year to come.
  • There is no need to pack books, unless professors say otherwise! The Library has access to most books as an ebook and all required books can be found on the reserve shelves in the library to be borrowed for a limited number of hours.
  • Students who live in the houses will often be hanging outside their houses when it is nice out. If you are walking by, you are often welcome to join in sitting outside with them.
  • Feel free to join any pickup games that happen around campus (Frisbee, kickball, catch, softball, etc.)
  • Feel free to ask any returning students questions. Most are happy to help in any way!
  • Don’t be afraid to ask classmates for rides to the store or a restaurant or to go explore Dubuque
Wait to order books until after Prolog: a lot can be accessed on the library site, and you can save yourself money by waiting to see what you’ll actually need/use
  • Prolog Week is the best time to get to know your classmates in person. Take any opportunity you can to meet your people.
  • Many things happen organically: if you see a gathering of people that you want to join ask them. All are welcome in this place.
  • The Prolog Week schedule is NOT the same schedule as the rest of the academic year! Know that this is just for one week.
  • Meet all the staff while you’re on campus! These are folks you’ll correspond with throughout the year. Ensure you know who everyone is. They love to have you pop in to say hi!
  • You don’t have to participate in everything throughout the week. Determine the must-dos and take good care of yourself based on your personal needs.

  • Watch the Seminary Post for a link to sign up for meals!
  • Continental breakfast is available for purchase each day. Coffee is available free of charge throughout the day.
  • Lunch is available each day. Lunch is sponsored by various groups on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday and so is free of charge. Extra items (fruit, granola bars, etc) are available for purchase. Tuesday and Thursday lunch is $6 per meal, which will be charged to your student account.
  • Various events take place during the dinner hours each day. Refer to the Daily Schedule and plan accordingly.

Practicing good self-care is important all the time, and Prolog Week is no exception. In the midst of all the energy, learning, and community, we encourage you to consider your own needs throughout the week. To support you in your habits for self-sustainability, we have several opportunities for you to participate in play, rest, and renewal while on campus!

🎨 Space for creativity will be in the DVF Conference Room. Pop in throughout the day for coloring supplies, meditative journaling pages, and friendship bracelet supplies.

😴 Space for rest and quiet will be in the Meditation Chapel. This will be a silent space for naps, stretching, or just a restful corner.

🏓 Space for play will be in the Guadalupe Lounge, where there are opportunities for board games, table tennis, and connection. You are welcome to bring a board game to share!

🧩 Space for collaboration will be in the library with puzzles and space for conversation and browsing.

Wartburg Seminary provides a counseling and/or spiritual direction subsidy for degree seeking students. Students may find counseling services or spiritual direction important for in-depth personal matters and/or for working on issues that impact their candidacy and professional leadership in the church. The counseling and spiritual direction subsidy provides $15.00 per session for up to 15 sessions per academic year.  The student or student insurance covers the remaining cost per session. All providers are expected to maintain confidentiality and do not release information to the seminary without a student’s expressed permission.

For purposes of record keeping, the seminary requests an invoice directly from the provider indicating the student’s name and the number of sessions in the designated billing period be submitted to Amber Lane, administrative coordinator for the DVF, at arobbins@wartburgseminary.org. Students must work out payment details with the provider and provide official billing documentation. Please check on counseling services available under your insurance plan to make the most of that potential resource.

Land Acknowledgment Statement

We at Wartburg Theological Seminary acknowledge our campus occupies ancestral lands stolen by the U.S. Government and white colonizers from the Sauk, Meskwaki, Miami, Ho-Chunk, Potawatomi, Očhéthi Šakówiŋ (Oh-chey-tee shah-koh-ween), and Kickapoo peoples. The Wartburg Seminary diaspora community continues to occupy these and other stolen lands first given to Native nations by the Creator.
